The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time position of Director of Communications. The Director of Communications is an important full time member of the Department of Psychiatry and although primarily off-site at this time, must be able to work on site as required in the future. Responsible for developing and implementing marketing and communication strategies, the Director of Communications is accountable for public perception of the Columbia Department of Psychiatry including our: highly effective inpatient and outpatient services; a robust and respected faculty practice; outstanding training programs; and a world-renowned research portfolio. The position is the communications interface with internal and external audiences. Collaborating with leadership and faculty within the department as well as with our larger health system and university, the Communications Director keeps the Department front and center with patients, donors, foundations, government grant making agencies and local, state and national policy makers. We are seeking experienced, highly diligent, confident candidates to serve as a connections strategist, helping the Department present a brand that is synonymous with excellence and that the Department is the source others look to for state of the science treatment, education, and research. A brand that is valued for ideas and direction regarding mental and addictive disorders.  The Director evaluates, develops and places content on traditional and social media platforms for a wide range of audiences. In addition to researchers, clinicians and educators, the Department is committed to educating all interested audiences on issues of prevention, treatment and recovery from mental and addictive disorders; and to help shape and promote policies and regulations that support the availability of effective, culturally competent treatments and services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Refine department brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
  • Lead development of cohesive communications strategy.
  • Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy, leading and/or assisting in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content.
  • Prepare and/or manage communications material using impeccable copy-writing and copy-editing skills.
  • Ability to translate research and technical mental health and addiction findings into language appropriate for lay public.
  • Understand graphic design, layout, and publishing.
  • Knowledge of content management systems, HTML coding, and digital graphics production.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro).
  • Expertise with social media platforms and social media marketing.
  • Experience with search engine marketing, Google Analytics, and Google AdWords.
  • Track engagement across various platforms and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Oversee small and diversely skilled communications team.
  • Cultivate an environment of readiness and alertness including crisis management and preemptive planning, maintaining awareness of department risks and threats.
  • Project a positive department image to the public.
  • Manage media relations and develop contacts with media members, influencers, and community leaders.
  • Ensure quality control of all information released.
  • Create and manage communications budget.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in communications, marketing or healthcare discipline.
  • 3-plus years of related experience.
  • Experience in stakeholder/community engagement.
  • History of leadership roles in successful communications and marketing campaigns.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with communications technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Media contacts and established media relations.
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance use disorder issues.
  • Avid learner that can articulate areas of interest and desired growth.
