The Substance Dependence Research Group at New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University Department of Psychiatry has an opening for a Research Assistant who will join a team of researchers conducting NIH-funded clinical and epidemiologic research.


The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the planning and successful completion of several studies. This will involve:

  • Programming, piloting, and debugging of computerized diagnostic interviews and questionnaires.
  • Data cleaning, management, and analysis.
  • Assisting in the preparation of grant proposals, manuscripts, posters and presentations for professional events.


  • A bachelor's degree, with preference given to a major in public health, or a behavioral, social, or computer science.
  • Must be meticulous in carrying out research protocols and be able to maintain a high level of accuracy with minimal supervision.
  • Careful, diligent work habits and ability to maintain focused attention is essential.
  • Strong quantitative skills and previous programming experience a major plus.
  • Prior experience in mental health or clinical research preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Minimum two-year commitment required, contingent on continuous funding.
