Description: The Research Support Assistant will assist the Principal Investigators in studies aimed at understanding the neurobiology of memory and of neuropsychiatric disorders using mouse models.  Work will be conducted in a basic neuroscience lab environment employing cutting edge techniques under the direct and close project supervision of an MD/PhD Physician-Scientist in the lab.  All duties will be carried out initially at the Hammer Health Sciences and Black Buildings of Columbia University Medical Center and then in the new, state-of-the-art Jerome L. Greene Science Center of the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind, Brain, Behavior Institute at Columbia University.


Duties: Principal duties and responsibilities will include:
Experimental data management, signal processing, and statistical analysis in Python under close direction of project supervisor.
Maintenance of existing Python program code base and Arduino-based experimental apparatus/control software.

Collaborative development of code base with research team for novel analysis and experimental approaches.
Some mouse behavioral training and assays, stereotactic surgery and post-op care; histological preparation of brain tissue when needed.
Opportunity per interest for hands-on experimental experience in chronic live imaging and manipulation of neural circuit function in awake, behaving mice using advanced techniques (e.g. in vivo 2-photon microscopy, optogenetics)
Opportunity for co-authorship on resulting publications based on contribution.
Possible flexibility in daily work hour schedule to accommodate applicant need

 
Qualifications: B.S./B.A. or higher in any of an engineering, math/computer, and/or physical/biological science with strong quantitative skills highly preferred.
Prior experience with Python and Arduino are preferred.  Familiarity with a version control system (e.g. git) is a plus.
Experience with lab mice, behavioral testing, & stereotactic surgery is a plus.
Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal skills, and abilities to work both independently and as part of a team are required.
The successful candidate should be capable of carefully following instructions, performing detail-oriented tasks, multitasking, and troubleshooting.
Minimum two-year commitment preferred, contingent on continuous funding.
Ideal for candidates wishing to gain practical training before moving onto Graduate or Medical School or into industry.  Lab has successful track record in all 3 areas.

Salary:$37,531-$43,716 plus $3,026 Location pay; further negotiable commensurate with experience and qualifications.
